Outside of photography sessions, we're constantly hiking new trails, scouting landscapes, studying maps, and revisiting places across the state in different seasons. We spend plenty of time on tools like Google Earth and AllTrails looking for interesting terrain, but most of our favorite discoveries happen the old-fashioned way: by getting out there and seeing what's beyond the next trail bend.

Stretching nearly 42 miles along the shoreline in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the park is known for its towering sandstone cliffs, turquoise water, and forest trails that open up to breathtaking overlooks. Located at the northern tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula - what us locals call the "Tip of the Mitt" - this area sits where Lake Michigan and Huron meet and where the Lower Peninsula connects to the Upper Peninsula via the Mackinac Bridge.
This part of northern Michigan is a place we call our second home (and the place we got married!), and spend tons of time exploring throughout the year. Between the mainland shoreline, state parks, and Mackinac Island, the Straits area offers a surprising number of locations that work beautifully for intimate elopements.
Couples drawn to dramatic water views can explore places like Wilderness State Park, where forest trails open to sweeping views across Lake Michigan toward the Mackinac Bridge and distant islands. Just a short drive away, Headlands International Dark Sky Park offers quiet shoreline and one of the darkest night skies in the region - making it an incredible location for sunset ceremonies or even stargazing portraits.
And never to be outdone, Mackinac Island remains one of the most iconic places in the Midwest. With limestone bluffs, forest trails, and sweeping views across Lake Huron, the island offers a landscape that will both transport you back in time (there are no cars on the island!) and uniquely peaceful.
