One of the things we love most about living and working in West Michigan is how much natural beauty exists with an easy drive. You don't have to trek deep into wilderness, drive way up north, or navigate complicated rules to find a place that feels peaceful, beautiful, and comfortable for real people.
Over the years, we've spent countless days exploring trails, revisiting favorite viewpoints in different seasons, and learning which locations consistently photograph beautifully while still allowing people to relax and be themselves. This guide focuses on spots throughout West and Southwest Michigan that are easy to access, welcoming to pets, and generally free or low cost for parking or admission. Most don't require special arrangements for a simple portrait session. Cascade peace park
Cascade Township
The Peace Park is one of our personal go-to locations to explore when we aren't shooting! The park is a quiet mature forest with winding trails over rolling hills. It's calm and tucked away, making it a great option for sessions that want privacy and natural surroundings. A small meadow adds a bit of openness, but overall the scenery is wooded and serene. This location is perfect for those wanting multiple scenic backdrops with just a short walk between them.

Ken-O-Sha Park
SE Grand Rapids
Ken-O-Sha is another long-time favorite of ours. This park shines in every season, making it a beautiful backdrop no matter what time of year you are taking photos. Features include a main paved path with compact foot-paths winding along Plaster Creek. This spot also is a popular bike path with both paved and dirt sections. This spot is especially good for high school seniors who want a laid-back, outdoorsy vibe and lots of variety without hiking far.

Roselle Park
Ada
Come for the giant rock climbing silo, stay for the variety of scenery! Roselle Park is one of Ada Township's largest natural areas, and it truly feels like a little bit of everything in one place. Wide paved paths wind through open meadows, wetlands and wooded sections, with scenic overlooks of the Thornapple River and plenty of quiet corners to explore. The iconic silo and surrounding structures add a unique visual element you will not find at most parks, while the restored natural areas keep the setting feeling peaceful and grounded. Since so many backdrops are packed into one park, it's easy to move between looks without long walks, which makes sessions feel relaxed and unhurried. It's a beautiful choice in every season, from fresh spring greens to warm fall color.

Fallasburg Park
Lowell
Fallasburg Park is one of the most iconic outdoor locations in the Lowell area, best known for its historic covered bridge, wide open riverfront, and towering shade trees that create a classic West Michigan feel. The park offers a mix of scenic backdrops all within a short distance, from grassy picnic areas along the Flat River to wooded pockets and quiet country-style edges. It's especially beautiful in late summer and fall, when the trees provide rich color and soft filtered light. Because of its popularity, it can feel lively on weekends, but there is usually enough space to find quieter corners away from the main bridge area.

KALAMAZOO AREA LOCATIONS
The Kalamazoo, Portage, and surrounding areas are full of peaceful, natural spaces that feel tucked away from busy roads and crowded parks. Many of these preserves prioritize conservation and low-impact recreation, which means quieter trails, abundant greenery, and a slower pace that helps sessions feel relaxed rather than rushed. You'll find a mix of wetlands, forests, open meadows, and calm waters, often all within a short drive of one another.
West lake nature preserve
Portage
West Lake Nature Preserve is Shannon's old stomping grounds, and a park she can navigate with her eyes-closed. It's the perfect peaceful setting with its wooded trails leading out to boardwalks amongst the wetlands and West Lake, grassy meadows, and flat trails winding through trees. The light here is especially beautiful in the evening as it reflects off the water and surrounding vegetation. Since most of the terrain is level, it's east to move around and get a lot of variety without a long walk.

Bishop's bog preserve

Bishop's Bog is a smaller, tucked away preserve that feels surprisingly peaceful for being so close to town. While the interior trails are natural, one of the biggest advantages of this area is the nearby paved path that runs alongside the preserve and connects toward Eliason Nature Preserve (see below). The paved section is lined with tall trees and greenery, giving you a beautiful wooded backdrop without needing to hike or navigate uneven terrain. It's a great option for sessions where comfort and accessibility matter, especially early in the season when dirt trails can be muddy. Because the preserve itself is compact, it's easy to combine multiple looks in a short amount of time while keeping the experience relaxed.

Kalamazoo

LAKE MICHIGAN SHORELINES
Few landscapes transform an ordinary evening into something memorable quite like the Lake Michigan shoreline. The scale of the water, the way the sky stretches as far as your eye can see, and the warm glow the settles across the sand near sunset create an atmosphere that feels both expansive and deeply calming.
Each beach has its own personality. While some feel wild and adventurous, others are gentle and easy to explore.
Rosy Mound Natural AreA
Grand Haven
Rosy Mound is one of the most visually striking locations in West Michigan. The approach begins in cool forest shade, transitions to rolling dunes and tall grasses, and finally opens to an expansive stretch of Lake Michigan that feels vast and peaceful at the same time. The journey to the beach is part of what makes this location special. Anticipation builds gradually, and by the time the water comes into view, the entire space feels cinematic.

This location is especially popular with dog owners, which gives the area a friendly, lively energy. The shorelines itself is broad and open without feeling crowded.

Holland
One of the most iconic beach settings in Michigan, Holland State Park offers wide sandy shoreline with views of the beloved Big Red Lighthouse. Mount Pisgah across the channel has a scenic overlook with views of Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan.

WORTH THE DRIVE
Unique destinations just outside West & Southwest Michigan
While most of our session take place close to home, there are a handful of locations a bit farther out that offer scenery you simply will not find anywhere else in the region. These spots feel more like mini destinations that local parks, with dramatic landscapes, unique natural features, or expansive views that make the extra travel time truly worthwhile. If you're open to a short road trip, these destinations can elevate your session into something unforgettable.
The Ledges | Oak & Fitzgerald parks
Grand Ledge
Oak Park is our go-to (and only) destination for outdoor rock climbing spot in the lower peninsula. Towering sandstone cliffs rise above the Grand River, creating dramatic views that feel completely different from the typical forest and field scenery found across most of the state. The area is popular with rock climbers, hikers, and explorers alike. You don't want to miss the park in the fall, when the surrounding trees turn vibrant. Despite it's beauty, much of the area still feel natural and slightly rugged, making it perfect for sessions that want a bold, adventurous backdrop. It's a bit of a drive from the Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo areas, but for many clients, the scenery makes it more than worth the trip!
